AFKN NEWSLETTER, MAY 1970

COMMANDER'S CORNER

Two new trophies were added to the AFKN collection this month as our Headquarters Area Beautification effort garnered first prize from US Army Garrison and our Troop Area effort was awarded second prize.

I want to express my thanks to everyone on the "Hill" for the cooperation demonstrated during the Spring Clean-Up Days. Special mention must go to the Area Beautification Officer, 2LT Barry Lacter and to the NCOs who headed the operation, First Sergeant William Van Buskirk, MSG Sidney Grantham, SFCs Bill Branyan, Ralph Cline, Leonard Johnson and James Marcum and SSG Keith Kemmer. Thanks again to all AFKNers for a job well done.

Since our last NEWSLETTER, AFKN has bid farewell to Deputy CO CPT Harvey Hakoda and Admin Officer, lLT Calvln Arnold. I wish both of them continued success at their new assignments. A hearty AFKN welcome to our new Admin Officer, lLT Thomas Anderson and our new OlC, Television, Air Force lLT Yolan LaPorte.

I am happy to report two major equipment additions to the Network. With the help of George Lim of the Sacramento Army Depot, the contract for our long-awaited new microwave system has been put up for bids. With some luck, we will see work begin on the system before long.

We also have just received an automation system which will allow us to broadcast automated stereo over Vagabond FM. The system should be put into operation (monaurally at first) within the next few weeks.

THE ALUMNI CORNER:

SGM Hal Fielding writes from the IO Shop, HQ V Corps, APO NY 09079, where he is the Information Supervisor. He recently finished a tour at the HTNC in Kansas City and was highly praised by the Center for an outstanding record of performance. There is a chance that Hal will join AFN late in the year... Ex-TV Director Bill Parker, now working in New York, appeared on a Radio Talk Show that queried Information Chief John C. Broger, shortly after "censorship "on AFRTS" was charged. The program was beamed overseas by AFRTS-W and those who remember Bill Parker enjoyed hearing him expound again... Another veteran of those days is Pete Esker, who holds forth as a DAC at the Command's PAO Office in Seoul. Pete is one of the really familiar faces on the Panmunjom scene since he makes regular trips up there. He and In-sook have a daughter.

LTC Laurence Souville and LTC Harry Bangs, members of the AFKK Ex-CO Club, report for work in the Pomponio Building, Arlington. SFC Bob Britsch, who honcho'd AFKN News at one time, was on the AFRTS-W News Staff but declared that he will retire this spring The most recent member of the Ex-CO fraternity is LTC Frank Tennant who is settled in Chantilly, Virginia, and is assigned to the Army Command Information Unit in Washington... Ex-AFKN C Secretary and Playboy Bunny, Sue Cox (and Terry) announce that Sue will deliver an heir. They live in Fairfield, California.

SGM Stough finished his tour at AFKN early in the year and decided to call it a career. He retired from the Army and is at pasture in Augusta... Leaving AFKN the same time, also for retirement, was SFC Lou Marsh. Lou doubled as manager of the 501 Club during his year with AFKN... The most recent NCOIC to depart the "Hill" was SFC Pete Richards who was NCOIC of Radio TOMAHAWK, and then became Net Radio Chief. Pete is settling into a new assignment.

AFKN News lost the NCOIC services of staunch MSG Jerry Clark. Jerry headed for Washington DC and continued assignment in the information field....Still other key supervisors at AFKN who caught the red tail recently were AF TSGT Ed Webb who was NCOIC of Television, and TSGT Don Fortney who was in charge of the Film Library. TSGT Webb writes from Webb AFB where he is managing a golf course!!

MSG Paul Van Dyke left his information job in the Pentagon for a tour in Vietnam....Another ex-Net Radio ex-Chief, MSG George Warde, communicates from Vietnam where he is on another tour with AFVN....Bruce Jed "got out" a year ago, and made connections with ABC Radio in New York. He is excited about the new musical show "Love" that ABC is promoting, and which recently became part of the RU shipment.

Production Chief Ed Masters spent April in the United States, beginning the month with Army and DOD meetings in Chicago, followed by the Convention of the National Association of Broadcasters. Among ex-AFKN types who were in Chicago at the time were LTC Souville, ex-Sergeant Chuck Lynch and Bruce Jed.

WTVJ-TV in Miami, where Rich Bergen operates a TV camera and where Greg Kendall is also esconsed in TV production, picked up another AFKN alumnus as a part-timer. AF Sgt Jim Reader moonlights at the CBS affiliate as a weekend newscaster. Jim was a favorite with AFKN audiences.

SP5 Ron Nance writes from Fort Gordon, Georgia, where he is writing for the post newspaper. He supplied information on other ex-AFKN types at Fort Gordon: SGM Clay Brooks is NCOIC of the TV Division while SSG Roger Vander Leest is a script writer in that same division. Ron received a phone call from SSG Rick Sitler who _is doing photography work for the Army in the Pentagon. And Ron adds tnat Steve Keeler, late of AFKN-TV, is now stationed in Germany.

Ex-Spec 5 Roland Mack, who departed AFKN in February, has landed in wuisville with WAVE-TV, an NBC Affiliate, as a producer-director. His wife Caryl has joined him from Florida....Also of interest to alumni is the news that Frankie is out of jail (quarantine) for the nth time, for having left tooth marks on a visitor to Vagabond Hill. The CO gave Figmo an Article 15 for not exercising proper supervision over Frankie.

FLASH: At a ceremony at AFKN Headquarters, Public Affairs Officer, Colonel Walter Moore, pinned Army Commendation Medals on First Sgt William Van Buskirk for his performance at Fort Leavenworth, and on sp4 Bob Lederer for excellent camera handling at his previous assignment. Then Staff Sergeant stripes were hung on Dave Cash. NEWSLETTER congratulates the trio!!!

ADMIN DIVISION

Alas, people come and go, old friends depart and new friends arrive. Here in the Admin Division we pay homage to the dearly departed lLT Arnold whose new assignment to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, will prove to be quite a challenge to him. Those of us who know him are well aware that he will "cut the mustard" in the good old Field Artillery without any problems. His replacement, lLT Thomas F. Anderson, adds a touch of Texas to the section and must really be something as he was here only a week and managed to get promoted to First Looie. We congratulate him on the promotion and welcome him to AFKN with open arms (he is an AG type) and a stack of paperwork.

"Handy Randy" Ashurst went back to TV Production after a short stint as our combination Mail Clerk, Training NCO and Transportation Coordinator. Maybe the fact that baseball season is starting up had something to do with the move. Who knows?? Randy has been replaced by an Army type who goes by the Monte Mansell moniker (he is a PFC but do not let that fool you -- he swings a mean paint brush as witnessed during the Spring Clean-Up here on the Hill). We welcome him to the Admin Section and wish him well even though he is from Pennsylvania.

Our old standby Mr Yi got promoted to the News Room and is making all kinds of money these days. Rumor has it that he ties from him lately. Maybe it was just a rumor at that. Mr Shin is filling his shoes here in the Orderly Room and is doing a pretty good job of getting along with "Top" and Lopez. Speaking of "Top," we hear he has been promising to go on a diet again. Last time he tried it, he lost three pounds and was so happy that he went out and bought himself a large pizza to celebrate.

sp5 Lopez is not feeling too well these days. Thought he made E6 but it turned out to be Denny Lopez at Tongduchon. Congrats Denny!! Sorry Don, maybe in a couple of years or so. The Supply Room is draped in black to commemorate the departure of our faithful Supply Sergeant "Toilet Paper" Kemmer. He lucked out and got his ITT to Okinawa. Right after he got his orders, the Government signed an agreement to turn Okinawa back to the Japanese. Wonder if---------no, that is impossible!! There could not be any connection there at all!!

3

SGT Gallagher is taking over in Supply and with the able assistance of sp4 Hudson, will carry on in the true Kemmer tradition. Pajuri just will not be the same with SSG Kemmer out of the picture. That winds it up for this month. Keep out of those "off limits" swimming areas.

NEWS

A group of "sword-wielding" Japanese students provided the News Center with its monthly quota of excitement. With Production Chief, Ed Masters, safely out of the way in Chicago, the students decided to grab a J-A-L airliner and fly to scenic Pyong Yang -- not counting on an intermediate stop at Kimpo. All members of the news staff put in extra hours while the plane was on the ground here, seeing that the story that unfolded was told accurately and with the immediacy that broadcast journalism can provide.

Several personnel changes since our last session. A young, hard working East Coast reporter left the News Center in April. sp5 Jud Booth (now Mr Booth) put in some long, sometimes unnoticed hours compiling the stories and films for Newsbeat Korea. Jud's replacement, A1C Brian Blazer, received some good news from home on April 19th, when he was informed that his wife had given birth to a baby boy. They have decided to name him Brian Nels. Congratulations, Dad!!

Gone, too, is Air Force Sergeant Art Shotwell. He has taken his books of Air Force Regs to Travis Air Force Base. On the "short-timers" list are Soldier-of-the-Month Jimmy Thompson, who will ETS, and Air Force Sergeant Don Andrews who has been assigned to William Air Force Base in Phoenix. KATUSA Sergeant Hong Sung Duk expects his ETS orders within a couple of weeks.

Added to the News Staff was sp4 Dick Nelson from Jefferson City, Missouri. Dick has been handling the morning news shift and providing some OJT for our OIC, 2LT Barry Lacter. Another new addition in the month of April was Mr Yi-Su Tok, formerly of the AFKN Orderly Room. Mr Yi has picked up the fundamentals of his demanding new assignment rapidly and tells us he is trying to forget he ever was a part of that raunchy Admin crew.

4

In the "World of Sports," a promotion for Sports Director Roy Berg. LTC Richard Gunsell pinned Staff Sergeant stripes on Roy in a mid-April ceremony.

Cornhusker SP5 John Jessup has been putting in some extra hours recently working with the Chosun Players. John plays Detective Sergeant Trotter in their current play "The Mousetrap."

Newsroom alumni MSG Jerry Clark (now a panelist on Pentagon Forum), SSG Rick Sitler, sp5 Ron fi-Nance and Air Force Sergeants Jim Reader and Dick Yarnell reported that their stateside assignments do not compare with the jobs they had at AFKN. They send regards to all the friends they left on the Hill.

NETWORK MAINTENANCE

SFC Franklin Manning arrived at AFKN and has been assigned to Pusan as area commander. SFC Manning was previously assigned to Tobyhanna Army Depot. sp5 Robert J. Dexter from the Army Pictorial Center, arrived and is assigned to Pajuri TV. A1C John Sanchez came in from Edwards AFB and is now working in Network Maintenance.

sp5 Michael Talley of Network Maintenance finished up a very distinguished tour and has departed AFKN for ETS and sunny Phoenix, Arizona. He received a Certificate of Achievement from the Commander for his outstanding accomplishments while ~~ a member of AFKN. Best of luck.

MSG Sidney Grantham is Operations Sergeant again. sp4 Mark Foster of South Post transmitter station is now assigned to Network Maintenance.

Kwangju has a much improved radio signal as a result of relocation of the station to Kwangju Air Base and work is currently in progress as an effort to provide suitable TV coverage at Kwangju. Network Maintenance personnel have installed a TV translator at South Post, Yongsan, which broadcasts on Channel 5, in order to provide coverage of a null area in that vicinity.

5

MSG Phillip Bagato along with SFC Franklin Manning, SGT Robert Titus, SP5 William Leslie, SP5 Clyde Sharpe, Mr Kim, Kwang Ho, and Mr Kim, Se Chang, put forth extraordinary effort in the transmission of TV to Chinhae via the UHF translator located at Pulmosan. A microwave system was installed between Changsan and Pulmosan to provide a signal at the translator. The translator was aligned and the antenna was oriented to furnish Chinhae with a signal. Additional equipment is planned for the Chinhae area in order to refine TV coverage of the overall area.

Personnel of Network Maintenance are busy with the dressing-up of cable runs, removal of no longer required cables and replacement of terminal blocks for the purpose of improving the overall cable distribution system at the Headquarters.

NETWORK RADIO

The big word at Network Radio recently has been "changes."

SSG Mike Shumer left AFKN, Korea, and the Army on 10 April. Although he hated to leave his famous conference calls and movie promos, he said he was looking forward to his return to Pasadena, California. There he hopes to make a living by selling penclls durlng the Rose Bowl Parade every January Flrst.

After some time without an actual NCOIC of Network Radio, SFC Bill Branyan was assigned here for the duties that go with being in charge of a radio network. You may remember Sergeant Branyan from his tour as NCOIC of Network TV or you may know him as Coach of the AFKN softball squad.

Another biggie came to Network Radio with the promotion of SSG Gus Treewater, Network Program Director. With an E7 and E6 in the office, the lower EM in Network Radio must watch their p's and q's. By the way, SSG Gus is looking for a job when he leaves the service (soon), and if you have any suggestions, keep them to yourself.

A1C Berry Burks is looking forward to some fun in the sun, and a job with Radio MERCURY in Kunsan. Coming to Network to take Berry's place is newly promoted sp5 Roger Schulman. He manages to keep busy on the air and in the Production Studio, but still finds time to visit with his younger fans in the area.

6

AFRTS is now sending stereo record shipments to its radio outlets around the world, and SP4 "Country" Bob Seagroves, radio's engineer, has been busy changing the styli (or some such monster). Thanks to Bob, the stereo records can be used, without harm to them.

A new quarter of programming is now in full-swing. From Sgt Tony Booth, comes word of a new, progressive Jewish show that will be aired Saturday mornings at 8:30. It is called "East of Eden," and is kind of a psychedelic, rock and roll, Jewish Chaplain series. Also, for those with love on their minds, there is a new show Monday through Friday evenings at 11. It is called "LOVE," and features the unreal voice of Brother John. It should be a real winner with our listeners.

As far as changes in FM programming for the new quarter, A1C Lee Linkous, Vagabond FM-PD, reports that Music Guy Gary Owens is going into backlog, to rest for a few months. Hopefully, he will return in another quarter or so. Lee also is introducing "Carousel." The idea of "Carousel" is a tightening of FM's own local music shows into one format, producing a sound to appeal to the largest segment of our FM audience at the best listening hours. The "Good Sound of Carousel" will feature the best of the top, easy-listening songs of the day as well as "Carousel Souvenlr Sounds" and "SpOtllght Sounds." Music is emphasized; active, listenable, recognizable music, old and new. It should prove a big boost to our FM crew.

22, 23 and 24 April found AFKN headquarters involved in "Earth Days" or something to that effect. Every section was working on a project to "beautify" the "Hill." Network Radio guys were assigned the task of repainting the curbs and street markings in the vehicle area. So, with bright yellow highway paint, SFC Bill Branyan set out with his troupe of skilled artists to prove something. The job will remain a landmark of radio, for at least two weeks.

In closing, Sgt Booth told of the sandal wearing disc jockey who put his foot in his mouth to make thong-in-the-cheek remarks.

RADIO COMET

AFKN Radio COMET was on the scene again with "Platters for Pints." On 3 April, Radio COMET did a remote broadcast from the Double Five Service Club, site of the biggest blood drawing

7

since the Battle of the Bulge. We were on the air from 8 am until 6 pm, and a total of 150 pints of blood were collected. AFKN's Bill Cranney, Dick Houser and Chuck Hanberry, spun the platters, along with the able assistance of our new part-timers.

Speaking of part-timers, we now have two, AF Sgt Mike Vose, who has worked in the Bangor Maine radio market, and A1C Jack Yack, who spun discs in Joliet, Illinois. Mike is assigned wlth the Weather Squadron, and Dick works in Supply. Both have been an asset to the station in more ways than one.

An Added attraction to programming at Radio Comet is "Sophisticated Soul," with Reggie Sullivan. SS is heard seven times daily during local hours, and features the latest soul discs, with 30 second voice-overs on the background of the artist or song. Sgt Sullivan works in the IO Shop, and is known as Osan's number one soul brother.

Radio COMET is losing our engineer, Dave Weber, next month. He has packed his tubes and transistors and will head for Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Sorry Dave, but that is another isolated tour.

AFKN local sports come alive again this spring, with our second season of coverage of the Osan Defender softball team. They opened 26 April with a double header against Suwon. AFKN's Bill Cranney and Mike Vose call the play-by-play.

RADIO HOMESTEADER

Radio HOMESTEADER's former Chief Engineer, Doug Kronlage, who was only recently promoted to SSG, is now re-acquainting himself with civilian life. sp4 Ron Johnson is the new Chief Engineer. One of sp4 Johnson's most recent projects was the installation of spring-action switches for the cart machines, which keeps them from recycling over the air and causing absent minded disc jockeys much grief.

DeeJays SP5 Roger Kohagen and A1C George Glass entertained Pusan teeny-boppers on 18 April with a record hop at the Youth Center. On Wednesday, 29 April, Roger originated his Night Beat Program from the Lower 4 EM Club, with a full remote setup, and stacks of records.

8

SGT Bob Titus, formerly of Net Maintenance, is happy to be back again with Pusan Television. And speaking of television, Chinhae is now getting some TV reception on Channel 70, which is the first UHF channel in the Republic.

Thanks to the diligence of staff members, not to mention plenty of hard work by our houseboy, HOMESTEADER breezed through its recent IG Inspection with a SUPERIOR rating.

RADIO KILROY

During March, SFC Ralph Thompson and SP5 Adam Sadowski completed a group study course in Spoken Korean. Now they can speak some Korean, but the natives do not understand what Specialist Sadowski says to them.

AIC Gary Matlock took a mid-tour leave to CONUS and returned here 14 April. He reports his leave was great, but he got frustrated waiting for space available hops both ways.

SSG Bob Britton and his wife spent a week's leave in Hong Kong and had a good time. They returned to Taegu on 1 April. During SSG Britton's absence, sp5 Marion Zimmerman was acting Station Commander and did a good job as Honcho.

Mr Lim, from Sacramento Army Depot, and sp5 Gough from Headquarters, arrived here on 2 April to check microwave sites. They went to Dartboard Microwave Site with Mr Yi, our Korean Engineer, and sp5 Adam Sadowski. The visitors also toured sites around Pusan and left here 4 April.

During the first week in April, all KILROY Radio-TV personnel fired the M-16 rifles for familiarization or qualification. Three men shot expert on the range: SP5s Marion Zimmerman and Adam Sadowski and sp4 Ivan Lemon. Quite a test considering we had received the new weapons less than five days before the qualifications.

This month, we made some changes to our library and Studio "A" as we rearranged our equipment and record racks.

On 10 April, KILROY was visited by Colonel Francis Giacomozzi, Commanding Officer of the 19th General Support Group (formerly Taegu Base Command), and CSM Wysocki. They toured our facilities and received a brief orientation on our mission.

9

Since the last AFKN News letter, our big project here was the relocation of our Pohang trasnsmitter and associated equirment. Until 15 April, our equipment was located at the Pohang VHF Site, and this proximity was causing interference with the VHF equipment. Also, Camp Libby at Pohang was getting poor reception with our signal.

sp4 Ivan Lemon, our Radio KILROY engineer, went to Pohang on 15 April with some personnel from Taegu Facilities Engineer to relocate our equipment to Camp Libby. Under Specialist Lemon's guidance and supervision, the project was completed on 20 April when we returned to the air at Pohang. Now Camp Libby and the marine base at Pohang are receiving the best reception they have had in quite a while. Our thanks and appreciation to Specialist Lemon and Mr Yi, our Korean engineer, for a job well done.

Two of our Radio KILROY staff have "short timeritis." SP4 Ivan Lemon, our carrot topped electronic wizard, goes back to the world in May for reassignment to Fort Sheridan, Illinois, while SP5 Marion Zimmerman, our early bird DeeJay, known affectionately as "Big Z," goes back for separation on 22 May.

Our lineup features "Big Z" weekday mornings, SSG Bob Britton of "5 o'clock World," sp4 Nate Oeser does his thing on "Anything You Want to Call It" weekdays at 7 pm, and Sp4 Byron "Lord Byron of STRATCOM" Maddow, our part-timer spins the platters weekdays 8-10 pm on "A Hard Day's Night." Another part-timer, SSG Wilbert Packer, "The Big Blaster," hosts our Saturday morning shows 5-8 and 11-12 noon.

RADIO MERCURY

SSG Willie Nelson and SGT L. R. Gaver recently congratulated themselves on making the AFKN less-than-ninety-to-go Roster. Roger Schulman accepted his promotion to sp5 with great military bearing and then promptly departed Kunsan for Seoul and permanent change of assignment. Schulman's replacement, A1C Berry Burks, initially disappointed at coming to the country without a horse, has been seen passing pleasantries with a local ox and mule team. Apparently, he has found "bigger and better things."

10

Earlier this month, Willie, Roger, Paul Pedersen and Tom Taylor demonstrated AFKN Fire Power to the base security squadron in a weapons familiarization meeting. "Kunsan's Finest" went away muttering something about a "guy on the radio always shooting his mouth off."

AFKN MERCURY hopes to be moving within the next two or three years, hopefully before the present building disintegrates. Mad Willie, after putting his great mind to work, redesigned the plans for the new studio, and it will take the civil engineers at least that long to figure out all of the red, green and blue lines.

Ed Daniel is anxiously awaiting his "turtle," Larry "CRAZ" Cookson. Ed can hardly wait to get back to the world and his new assignment, Fort Hood, Texas.

Paul and Willie are both in bed recuperating from work!!! It seems they got spring fever and decided to make a garden. So, with shovels, pick and rake, they industriously tore into the ground for about ten m1nutes before collapsing. They can still be heard murmuring something about watermelon seeds.

TELEVISION

A few big changes this past month. we have a new OIC and NCOIC at the helm.

Air Force Lieutenant Yolan LaPorte, OIC, TV, hails from Annapolis, Maryland. He was previously assigned to Headquarters Aerospace Defense Command I0 Shop in Colorado where he directed films on Air Defense Operations. He received a bachelors degree in TV and Film Production from the University of Maryland.

SFC John O'Connor has taken over as Network TV NCOIC. This is his second tour at AFKN and he has commented on the changes. The KN personnel have seen changes in him also - older, fatter, more gray hair and still with the perplexed look on his face, "What am I doing here??" Sgt O'Connor's family is wintering this hiatus in the "Alte Heimat," Munich, Germany.

AFKN was again able to provide live APOLLO recovery coverage courtesy of the Korea Ministry of Communications. KBS video and AFRTS audio were mated and transmitted to AFKN TV Sites throughout the Republic. Results were spectacular - - the best recovery coverage yet.

11

AFKN's new remote van got its first workout in April with the taping of a USO Show at Yongsan's Moyer Service Club. SSG John Lichtsteiner and Mr Kim, Chong Shik, each received letters of commendation from Colonel Walter Moore, Eighth Army PAC, for "superior efforts in completely remodeling the AFKN Remote Van."

This summer, the van is being used to tape baseball games at Yongsan, Camp Casey, and Camp Red Cloud. In addition, tapings of more USO Shows and remote specials are planned.

AFKN's "News Focus" is using a new set and format. You will also see new IDs - all part of AFKN's "New Look."

Leaving AFKN in April was sp5 Lee Fairchild. After doing time in the rice _paddies of Vietnam and Korea, he departed for the golden vistas of the world.
